How often do you give yourself a rest from your work?
There is always something that we can be doing for our businesses … so how do we decide when overworking is negatively impacting our productivity?
Here are 3 TIPS that will help you increase your productivity … they are uncanny because they’re the opposite of what we think will work.
TIP 1 — Take a Break!
That’s right, instead of plowing through your tasks with your head down and butt up, set a timer and work on one task until the timer goes off. Take a 5-10 minute break and get back to that task. Some people find that 25 minutes on – 5 minutes off works — others like 30 minutes on – 10 minutes off. Find a combination that works for you.
TIP 2 — Stop Multitasking!
Instead, focus on tasks for blocks of time. Look at your list of tasks … yes, you need to create a to-do list … and decide how long it will take to complete each task. Then divide that time up by the days. In the figure below you can see how multitasking results in limited task completion. But when we prioritize tasks and focus on the task until it’s complete, the results are much better. Work on Task 1 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday – and it’s done; Task 2 on Thursday, Friday, and Monday; Task 3 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday – and both tasks are finished at the end of the week. Try this approach and let me know how it works for you.
TIP 3 — Stand Up!
That’s right … work standing up … have stand-up meetings … every time you get a phone call, stand up. Our brains need the shift as much as our bodies. You can even walk in place … research also shows that jumping for 1 minute can reset your brain and renew your energy level.
