Bucket Holes

I used to teach child development … before that I spent 7 years as a personal counselor … one of the analogies I used to teach about coping mechanisms was the holey bucket.

Envision this bucket as the place where your emotional reserves are kept.  As we develop we learn how to cope with life, however, no one has ever had a perfect upbringing … it’s impossible because our parents, extended families, and friends … everyone who had any impact on us … were all human … and not perfect.  Of course, neither were we – actually we still aren’t <smile>!

So, as a result of being human and surrounded by humans, life happened to us and those interactions, losses, and damage caused holes in our buckets.

  • Some people have holes near the top, so they’ve got lots of emotional reserves to get them through the ups and downs life.
  • Others have holes 1/2-way down the side of the bucket, so they have a bigger challenge when faced with multiple issues that draw on their emotional reserves.
  • Still others have holes near the bottom of the bucket – for them it seems like any emotional reserve that’s banked is lost as soon as they are faced with a challenge.
  • Last, there are those who’s have holes in the bottom of their buckets … some don’t even have a bottom.  This group never has any reserves and they barely make it through life – many are caught in come type of addiction … in an attempt to numb the pain.

THE BIG QUESTION

How do I patch the holes in my bucket?

That’s right LOVE!

Here are just a few verses from the Bible that talk about love:

There is no room in love for fear.  Well-formed love banishes fear.  1 John 4:18

And regardless of what else you put on, wear love.  It’s your basic, all-purpose garment.  Never be without it.  Colossians 3:14

Love from the center of who you are; don’t fake it.  Romans 12:9a

The whole point of what we’re urging is simply love — love uncontaminated by self-interest and counterfeit faith, a life open to God.  1 Tim 1:5

If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate.  1 Corinthians 13:1

For this is the original message we heard: We should love each other.  1 John 3:11

May the Master pour on the love so it fills your lives and splashes over on everyone around you…  1 Thessalonians 3:11b

Let love in … let it patch the holes in your bucket … then share your love to help others.
