Resolutions or One Word?

Are you planning your 2018 resolutions?

It’s fairly common for us to think about starting fresh for the new year … however, only a small percentage of people actually come up with resolutions and an even lower percentage keep them.  We do have some common thoughts about what we’d like to change … here are some 2018 resolutions, from a YouGov survey:

  • Eat better
  • Exercise more
  • Spend less money
  • Increase self-care
  • Read more books
  • Learn a new skill
  • Get a new job
  • Make new friends
  • Take up a new hobby
  • Focus on relationships

They sound good … so what’s the issue?  I see a couple of things … they’re

  • Too general
  • Too easy to give up on
  • Too big — not sure where to start

So instead of making New Year’s resolutions that we’re probably not going to keep, let’s try a different approach: a one (or two or three) word theme for 2018

One word to focus on for the year

One word that drives everything you do

One word as a foundation for your decisions

One word to inspire you during the easy times and the hard times

One word to challenge and stretch your during 2018

New Year’s resolutions are supposed to motivate us to improve our lives

Well, choosing a one word theme for 2018 is an even better way to make positive changes in your life.  Instead of just having an impact on just your eating or exercising, focusing on your one word can produce a huge impact on every aspect of your life.

Ready to leap into figuring out your 2018 word(s)?

Here are some suggestions:

  • Reflect

Take some time to think about how you lived the last year or two.  Are there any patterns or themes that keep showing up? What changes would have the greatest impact on your life? What words would sum up these ideas?

  • Tap into your faith

Ask God — spend some time in the Bible and see what jumps out at you.  Open your heart and mind and listen intently for inspiration.  When you hear a word, embrace it and go with it — I know I resisted mine a little this week, but I know it’s exactly what I need.

  • Keep it in the forefront

Once you decide on your word, optimize the impact by making sure you see it every time you turn around.  Change the image on your computer desktop … put the word on the background of your phone … stick a note with your word on your bathroom mirror … create an IFTTT message that sends your word to your phone every day … put it wherever you’ll see it the most!

  • Check, check, and re-check

Set up regular times to evaluate how you’re doing at implementing your word.  Ask yourself what impact your word is having on how you’re living your life … how you’re making decisions … and zero in on changes that you can make so your word is making an even great impact.

  • Connect with your community

Don’t keep your word a secret and don’t journey into your 2018 word alone.  Tell the significant people in your life know what you are focusing on and you will have the support you need to live out your word when it becomes a challenge.  Plus, you’ll probably inspire others to find their one word!

My word

I keep hearing “discipline” … I know that’s what I need in my life … so that’s my word for 2018.  Here are the Scriptures that I’m going to memorize and apply to my life:

  • Get the truth and never sell it, also get wisdom, discipline, and good judgment. Proverbs 23:23
  • Lord, your discipline is good, for it leads to life and health.  Isaiah 38:6a
  • discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should.  1 Corinthians 9:27a
  • No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening — it’s painful!  But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.  Hebrews 12:11
